Consular Registration

Consular Section keeps a record of British nationals living in Jamaica. If you are a resident here, or are planning to visit for three months or more, we strongly advise you to register. Once registered you should update your records on a yearly basis. Consular registration is free.

Please download the form below and complete details for all your British family members in Jamaica. As the High Commission strengthens its online communications, it would be helpful, where possible, for you to include an e-mail contact on your form. We encourage you to use this service if you have not already done so. Alternatively, you can register at the Consular section in person.

Please post your completed form, together with a copy of the details page of your passport, to:

Confidentiality of registration records :
The information contained in the register will not be given to a third party without the written consent of the person concerned.

We have set up a new improved online registration service called LOCATE for British nationals travelling or living abroad to register themselves with the FCO.

In order to use LOCATE, you will need to register separately. But you will only need to register once. British nationals who are either resident in or visiting any country abroad, whether for business or pleasure, should register their details online. The registration details will remain on LOCATE. Details of your visits or residence abroad will not remain after their end date. LOCATE will accept details of travel abroad up to one year ahead. Please note that an existing subscription to the FCO's Online Services will not allow access to LOCATE.

We are confident that this new service will improve our ability to provide help in crisis situations and reduce delay and worry in times of stress for family and friends at home.

To complete the LOCATE online consular registration form, please go to:LOCATE - online consular registation

For Jamaicans returning to live in Jamaica, there are several local Returning Residents Associations that offer advice. For further information please see the Returning Residents section of the Jamaica Information Service website which includes a list of contact details.

Registration as a British Citizen

The British Government has no objection to dual or multiple citizenship or to a person holding passports from more than one country. However, certain other countries do object so it is advisable to check with the authorities of the other country concerned.

Registration as a British Citizen

The Home Office are responsible for Immigration control. They also consider applications for permission to stay, citizenship and asylum. If you have enquiries about whether you, or a member of your family, are entitled to British Citizenship by birth, naturalisation or registration please read the guidance on the Home Office website
  1. You will need to visit the Consular section of the British High Commission in Kingston, with your "Application for registration as a British citizen (Form UKM)".
  2. The High Commission will then forward the UKM application to the    Home Office in the UK for action, a process which can take up to 6 months.
  3. If registration is approved, the Home Office then forward the High Commission a "Certificate of Registration" from the Home Office
  4. You may then apply for a new British Passport at the High Commission.

Declaration of renunciation of British citizenship, British Overseas citizenship or British subject status

The law covering renunciation is contained in the British Nationality Act 1981 and the regulations made under it. If you are a British citizen, a British Overseas citizen or a British subject, you may renounce your citizenship or status if:
  • Either you already have some citizenship or nationality other than the citizenship or status that you wish to renounce. (But see note below).
  • Or you can satisfy the Home Secretary that you will acquire such a citizenship or nationality after renouncing British citizenship, British Overseas citizenship or British subject status, and
  • you are of full age, i.e. aged 18 or over. (But if you are under 18 and have been married, you are treated as being of full age for this purpose), and
  • you are of full capacity. The Home Office consider this requirement met if you have some understanding of the meaning and consequences of renunciation. You may have enough understanding even if you suffer from some form of mental disorder, but we need to look at such cases individually.

Renunciation form RN1 is for British citizens, British Overseas citizens and British subjects who wish to renounce their citizenship or status. British overseas territories citizens should use form RN2. British Nationals (Overseas) should use form RN3. Applications should be submitted to the Consular Section at the British High Commission in Kingston with the respective Consular Fees . The High Commission will then forward the application to the Home Office in the UK for action, a process which can take up to 6 months. After approximately 4 to 6 weeks, the High Commission will receive a Renunciation confirmation, which will be processed and forwarded to you.
